DAY 1
ORIGIN | LISBON | FÁTIMA

In the afternoon visit to the Sanctuary of Fátima, formally titled by the Catholic Church as Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Rosary of Fatima. This is known by a place of Christian pilgrimage and Catholic devotion, preserving the memory of the events that led to its foundation, namely the apparitions of Our Lady to the three little shepherds - Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto - in 1917. Its magnitude and relevance from the religious point of view has long been widely recognized nationally and internationally. By express will of the Holy Apostolic See, this is a National Sanctuary. It is also one of the most important Marian shrines in the world belonging to the Catholic Church and the largest international religious tourism destination, receiving around six million visitors a year. It was distinguished with three papal gold roses and visited by Popes Paul VI (1967), John Paul II (1982, 1991 and 2000), Benedict XVI (2010) and Francisco (2017). The Sanctuary of Fátima consists mainly of the Chapel of Apparitions, the Prayer Hall (outdoor), the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the respective Colonnade, the vast Basilica of the Most Holy Trinity, the retreat houses of Our Lady of Carmo and Our Lady of Sorrows, the Valinhos sacred ways and the Paul VI Pastoral Center. SANTIAGO COMPOSTELA | COVADONGA

The rock - or wall - that the boat was attached to today still exists, and is placed under the Altar of the Church of Santiago de Padron. On a hill, not far from the center of the village, on the other side of the Sar River, is another place of worship to Santiago: the stone on which, according to legend, Santiago celebrated Mass. Still Padron is also known due to its main gastronomic specialty: the fried peppers. These peppers, which are actually grown in the neighboring village of Herbón, are internationally known and can easily be purchased in the Portuguese market. After a short visit, departure to the Picos de Europa. After lunch visit to the sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin of Covadonga. The Santa Cueva is a mandatory place of passage for those who enter the Picos de Europa via Cangas de Onís. It was thanks to the Virgin that Pelagius can defeat the Muslims and start the Reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula. We can see his tomb in Santa Cueva and next to him the image of the Virgin. It was another Asturian king who had this Sanctuary built in the same cave where Pelagius was said to have taken refuge during the battles against the Moors, his grandson D. Afonso I (eighth century). But it was King Alfonso X (13th century) of who made the tomb of the first Asturian king stay in this place that they consider sacred and which today is a zone of pilgrimage. A sign marks the visit of his most famous pilgrim, Pope John Paul II. They say that Covadonga means “source of the pit” and it is true that under the cave we can see a small waterfall and a lake.
